beautiful bookcases

Sunday, November 27, 2011

This Thanksgiving as I was reluctantly cleaning out my closet at home, sorting through high school and college memorabilia, I realized that I have no where to display any of my books or photos in my new house.  A new bookshelf would be the perfect solution for me.  Bookshelves can be a great addition to any room, and with the right accessories, they can be extremely personal and unique.  Here are some bookshelves that really inspire me:

happy thanksgiving

Thursday, November 24, 2011

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope everyone has a wonderful day of overeating with their family and friends! This year I am especially thankful for my job, as well as the countless other blessings I have in my life.

source
Or, in the words of How I Met Your Mother (love that show), Happy Slapsgiving!

source
I'm planning on stuffing my face with my grandmother's delicious turkey and then having a Friends Thanksgiving episode marathon, because really, what is better than the Thanksgiving episodes?

wishlist wednesday | november twenty-third, 2011

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

It's wishlist wednesday! but more importantly, it's the day before Thanksgiving!!!

1. I saw these Anthropologie Bundled Up Critter Candles the other day on Dallas Shaw's blog and I am seriously considering purchasing one of these cuties for my office or bedroom.
2. 100 Years of Fashion Illustration by Cally Blackman is a great collection of inspiring fashion illustrations that would be a great addition to any coffee table book collection.
3. I love these Kate Spade bourgeois bow stud earrings mainly because I love the subtlety of stud earrings, but I would wear them every day of December.
4. I'm in the process of building up my collection of Christmas decorations, and this Eiffel Tower tree topper from Pottery Barn is adorable.  It might be a little bit trendy to use every single year, but it would make for a very chic Christmas tree.
5. I would love to carry this Ugg Sparkle Clutch to any Christmas or New Year's party this holiday season.

I hope everyone has a lovely Wednesday and a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow!
Cheers,
Ellie

wedding drawing

Monday, November 21, 2011

I recently did an illustration for a friend to give as a wedding gift.  The illustration was for a couple named James and Lee to have in their house.  James and Lee were married this past July and as an artsy couple, they asked for art as gifts at their late reception.  I have done these sort of pen + ink "doodle" drawings for several of my close friends, but I had never done one for something like a wedding gift.  I really enjoyed creating it, and here's what I came up with!

This is the drawing before I added color.

during the process of adding color....

 The finished product!

I mailed the piece to my friend who had it framed before giving it as a gift.  I'll post a picture of the finished framed product as soon as I can.

Anyway, I just wanted to give a little peek on something that I really enjoy doing.  If you are interested in having me do something like this for you, don't hesitate to ask!

beautiful kitchens

Monday, November 14, 2011

A beautiful kitchen is a beautiful thing.  A lot of time can be spent in the kitchen, so why shouldn't it be as beautiful as a living room or a bedroom?  Take a look at a few of these lovely cooking/eating spaces:

source | source
The lighting in both of these spaces is really phenomenal.  Both the chandelier and the lantern pendant serve as great focal points.  Also, the tables that work as islands and eating areas are great, as well as the glass cabinets.
source
This kitchen is very clean and simple, but the beautiful chandelier, rug, and other small accents such as the robins-egg-blue door make it a great space.

source
The continual use of grey throughout this kitchen helps to tie this somewhat large space together while the white accents bring it to life.

source
These yellow cabinets are absolutely one of a kind, and really make this kitchen unique.  The black accents enrich the color while the wood island and the barn-style pendant lights create a farmhouse feel.

source
I love the two separate islands that help to tie this large kitchen together.  The granite counter tops + the chopping block island are absolutely to die for.  I also love the lighting and the fact that the kitchen merges into a living area.

cheers to.... classic movies.

Friday, November 11, 2011

One of my favorite things to do on a relaxing weekend is curl up on the couch and watch some of my favorite classic movies.  Here are a few of the best:

source
When Harry Met Sally is seriously my all time favorite movie... really, anything with Meg Ryan (circa Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail) in it I love.

source
Dazed and Confused is a great movie to watch with friends.. it's hilarious and I love the 60s/70s styles that the girls in it wear.

source
Grease is and always will be a classic.  Oh Sandy.

source
Julia Roberts + Richard Gere = Pretty Woman = Perfection.

source
Love love love Dirty Dancing.  Nobody puts Baby in a corner.

Happy Veteran's Day! Hope you all have a great weekend.

new issue of Lonny

Thursday, November 10, 2011

The Nov/Dec 2011 issue of Lonny Magazine is live on their website!  This is another one of my online magazine obsessions.  Lonny focuses mainly on interiors, and pretty much everything they feature is dripping with style and good taste.  It's definitely something you'll want to look at.  This month has a really great party-planning piece as well as a wonderful feature on Johnathan Adler's office, showroom, etc.

wishlist wednesday | november ninth, 2011

Wednesday, November 9, 2011

We've made it halfway through the week! Which also means it's Wishlist Wednesday.....

  1. This Thankful Forest Card from the lovely Rifle Paper Co. would be adorable framed and set out for Thanksgiving.  You can also buy the card in a set of 8 to send out to friends and family as a Thanksgiving dinner invitation or just for fun.  Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and it often gets overshadowed by Christmas, but this is a cute and easy way to decorate for it specifically.
  2. Minted has recently added these fabulous journals to their online store.  There are a ton of covers to choose from and each journal is customizable to fit your personality.  At the affordable price of $16, this is the perfect space to jot down ideas and inspirations.
  3. Trays are a new essential for every interior, and this Small Lucite Tray by Dabney Lee definitely fits the bill.  It’s the perfect size to use as a catch-all on your desk or dresser and it features a preppy monogram.  Love!
  4. I’m not sure how practical these Leopard Sperrys from dELiA*s are, but aren’t they adorable?  I would plan outfits around these shoes on the reg.
  5. A Very She & Him Christmas might be the Christmas album I’m most excited to listen to.  I’m trying to hold out until it gets closer to Christmas to listen to it, but its just so hard!  If you haven’t heard of them, She & Him feature singer/actress Zooey Deschanel.  Zooey also stars in FOX’s new series, The New Girl, which if you haven’t seen yet, set your tivo right this second.

office space.

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

The office is one of my favorite rooms to dream up designs for.  This could possibly be because so much inspiration stems from being and working in your office, that it needs to be a space that is inspirational in itself. Check out some of these fantastic office spaces that I would love to do a little designing or blogging in:

source
I absolutely love the all white desk in this office, but the white wicker office chair with the cozy faux fur is what really inspired me.  The cute doggie doesn't hurt, either.

source
I think that this wood plank desk top is absolutely to die for.  Any accessories against the light wood look phenomenal.

source
This inspiration/bulletin board is great.  It's full, but not too cluttered.  I also love the Prismacolor markers sitting on the desk.  I swear by them!

source
This office space has a lot going on, with many mixed textures and patterns, but I think all of the color and variety would be stimulating to the mind.

source
I love the dark wood in this space.  The desk is small but organized, and I could totally see my self nestling into this spot on a rainy afternoon and getting a lot of work done.

I hope these spaces have inspired you to make your work area more interesting and inviting!

cheers,
Ellie

artist : inslee haynes

Monday, November 7, 2011

Inslee Haynes is an artist who creates beautiful watercolor paintings and sketches.  She is a freelance artist with several high profile clients.  Her creations feature women with a focus on fashion design.  She also has created some amazing interior renderings which, as an interior designer, I am obsessed with.  You may have already seen much of her work, but if not, check out her website here! Also, her daily blog is adorable and a must-read!

sweater weather

Thursday, November 3, 2011

It's about to be that time of year.. pull out the old box of sweaters so that you have something to brave the colder temperatures with. (can you tell I'm really excited that it's getting colder?)  This year, I'm especially inspired by reindeer and fair isle sweaters that are warm enough to cozy up in.  Check out some of my choices below: (ps. I definitely will be purchasing the bottom left ASOS Reindeer Sweater for those holiday family gatherings.)

clockwise starting with top right: Neo-Jacquard Pullover, Anthropologie | Oversized Batwing Sleeved Orange Jumper, ROMWE | Look on the Bright Cider Tunic, ModCloth | Reindeer Sweater, ASOS | Boys Shawl-Collar Cotton Sweater, Ralph Lauren |

November Matchbook Mag

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

The November issue of Matchbook is now live on their website!  This online magazine has become one of my favorites because of its wonderful inspiration, lovely stories, and sweet designs.  I also especially love this month's description of The Matchbook Girl, which they include in every issue.  This month they have a wonderful feature on Kate and Andy Spade and their home in NYC.  The best part of Matchbook is that it is completely free and easily accessible online!

wishlist wednesday | november second, 2011

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

It's Wishlist Wednesday again.....

  1. This 2012 letterpress calendar by 1canoe2 is absolutely ideal for Christmas presents this year.  The set comes with 6 pages worth of 12 months as well as a small wood stump to prop it in.  I’m hoping this will be gracing my desktop in the New Year.  You can find the calendar in 1canoe2’s etsy shop.
  2. The Office is one of my favorite TV shows of all time, and Mindy Kaling, writer, producer, and actor of the show, has just written her first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and Other Concerns).  The New York Times has said that “she's like Tina Fey's cool little sister. Or perhaps… the next Nora Ephron.” Seriously cannot wait to read this book.
  3. My search is on for an outfit to wear this holiday season that will be suitable for Christmas parties, New Year’s Eve, and any other occasions or festivities headed my way.  I’m obsessed with this blouse and skirt from Urban Outfitters because it has just the right amount of glitz on the shirt collar and the skirt features a lovely holiday color palette.  This outfit is definitely on my Christmas list this year!
  4. I’m in love with this Robert Abbey Delta Glazed table lamp from Lamps Plus.  It comes in about a million (okay, not a million) different colors and would be the perfect addition to any living room, bedroom, or office.
  5. One of the reasons I love fall and November so much is because Starbucks starts using their seasonal red holiday cup again.  I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but it’s hard for me to resist a little “Christmas-in-a-cup” on a cold November morning. (photo credit)

new design project //

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

I have been asked to create an original piece of art for a wedding gift for a friend of a friend and I couldn't be more excited! I have started gathering my inspiration for the project and just wanted to share a little bit of that.  I especially can't wait to share the final product.  Stay tuned!
